Alien's Passport

An alien’s passport is a travel document for which some foreigners can apply if they do not have a valid travel document and they cannot get a new one in the country of which they are nationals for reasons beyond their control.

The passport is valid for all the countries in the world.

Who can apply for an alien’s passport?

Foreigners who:

  • hold a permanent residence permit in the Czech Republic, have no valid travel document and prove that they cannot get a new one for reasons beyond their control,
  • are eligible for a permanent residence permit in the Czech Republic because they were placed in child custody and have no travel document,
  • have been granted subsidiary protection.

How long is an alien’s passport valid for?

It is generally issued for 10 years, for 5 years in the case of foreigners under 15 years of age. In some cases the validity is determined individually and can be shortened.


Can the validity of a foreigner’s passport be extended?

The validity cannot be extended.

An alien’s passport expires:

  1. by final revocation of a permanent residence permit,
  2. when a foreigner placed in child custody stops being eligible for a permanent residence permit,
  3. by a final decision to withdraw subsidiary protection,
  4. by a final court decision on an action against a decision to withdraw subsidiary protection,
  5. by a final court decision on an appeal against a decision of a regional court on an action against a decision to withdraw subsidiary protection,
  6. on the expiration day of subsidiary protection.

In what cases will an alien’s passport be removed or not issued?

An alien’s passport will be removed or not issued if:

  • the reasons for its issuance have ceased to exist,
  • an order is issued against you for not complying with a maintenance obligation or monetary liabilities,
  • there are criminal proceedings against you or you have not served a custodial sentence imposed by the court provided that the sentence was not pardoned or statute barred.

The decision on the removal of the alien’s passport can only be taken provided that it is proportionate in terms of its effect on your private and family life.

Additionally, in the case of foreigners with granted subsidiary protection, an alien’s passport will not be issued if there is a well-founded concern that the foreigner could pose a security risk for the Czech Republic or seriously breach the peace, or if the foreigner is registered in the Schengen Information System.
