Citizens of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland

On February 1st 2020, the Agreement on the withdrawal of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland from the European Union and the European Atomic Energy Community came into effect and the United Kingdom, therefore, exited the European Union. The second part of the withdrawal agreement lays down conditions for the residence of the citizens of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. These citizens form two categories now:

  1. British citizens who were residing in the Czech Republic by December 31st 2020 and to whom the withdrawal agreement applies, leaving them almost the same rights as EU citizens have,
  2. British citizens who are considered from January 1st 2021 third countries citizens with the same rights, obligations and types of proceedings as other third countries citizens without the right of free movement. These are citizens who:
    • have never resided in the Czech Republic, or
    • have interrupted their residence for over 6 months for any reason or for one year for substantial reasons such as pregnancy, serious illness, studies, relocation abroad by the employer). In the case of carrying out the duty of military service, the residence is not deemed interrupted.
