A long-term residence permit for the purpose of scientific research is intended for third countries citizens who want to reside in the Czech Republic as scientific researchers and are going to undertake research activities under a hosting agreement.

Who can apply for this type of residence permit?

You can apply for a long-term residence permit for the purpose of scientific research if you are a third-country national wanting to reside in the Czech Republic for more than 3 months and you are going to undertake research activities in the Czech Republic under a hosting agreement closed with a research organisation. Research organisations are, for example:

  • Public research institutions
  • Universities
  • Other research organisations registered on the list of research organisations approved for hosting scientific researchers from third countries

A complete list of research organisations is managed by the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports.


How long is this residence permit valid for?

For a maximum of 2 years.


What does this type of residence permit look like?


What obligations and restrictions does this residence permit mean?

You must fulfil the purpose of your stay for the whole duration of your residence permit. You must also follow the obligations for foreigners stipulated by law.

What does this residence permit enable you to do?

If you hold a valid residence permit, you can leave and re-enter the Czech Republic repeatedly. You can also travel within the Schengen Area without a visa.

As a holder of a long-term residence permit for the purpose of scientific research, you can also:

  • Work in the Czech Republic without an additional work permit (free access to the labour market).
  • After you finish the research activities, apply, among others, for a long-term residence permit for the purpose of seeking employment or starting a business.
  • Apply for a long-term residence permit for the purpose of scientific research. in other EU Member States, directly in the territory, without having to apply at a diplomatic mission. In this case, your family members can apply in the same way for a long-term residence permit for the purpose of family reunification.

Can you apply for this type of residence permit even if you have no long-term visa or residence permit in the Czech Republic?

Yes, if you hold a long-term residence permit for the purpose of scientific research issued by another EU Member State (except for Ireland and Denmark). You can also apply at one of the Czech Republic’s diplomatic missions.
