EXTENSION

To acquire a long-term visa in the Czech Republic the foreigner must prove that he/she is going to reside in the Czech Republic for a specific purpose.  The purpose of residence is usually an activity lasting more than 90 days and requiring the foreigner’s constant presence in the Czech Republic. However, not every purpose, i.e., activity, can be a reason for granting a long-term visa.

Purposes that give reason for granting a long-term visa are mainly those directly stipulated in the Foreigners Act and then those determined by the practice. These purposes are:

  • doing business,
  • studies,
  • scientific research,
  • seasonal employment,
  • special work visa,
  • family purposes,
  • cultural purposes,
  • spiritual purposes,
  • sports purposes,
  • health purposes.

In addition to these purposes, a long-term visa can also be issued for other purposes specifically given by the law or practice.  Such purposes are called “OTHER”.

These include e.g.:

  • Secondary school, conservatory or higher vocational school studies which are not carried out as part of an exchange programme
  • Studies of a university unaccredited study programme
  • Studies at a branch of a university not accredited in the Czech Republic but accredited in another EU Member State
  • Post-secondary education or language and professional preparation courses or programmes
  • Study tours and other education courses or programmes
